President Rodrigo Roa Duterte disclosed his agenda for his three-day Working Visit to Japan during his departure speech at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal II.
“I leave for a three-day official visit for Japan. This official visit will be a valuable opportunity to further deepen and and broaden the Philippines’ relationship with Japan, our valued strategic partner and one of our true friends,” he said.
According to the President, the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paved the way to discuss key issues of mutual interests between the two countries.
“We will discuss among others the greater political, social, and defense cooperations, particularly the maritime domain awareness and maritime security,” he added.
President Duterte talked on his scheduled meeting with Japan’s top leaders to tell them that the country is open for business. He also stressed that he would seek to open more avenues of cooperation in key infrastructure development to back the sustained growth of the Philippines.
“In particular, we can tap the experience and expertise of Japan in developing high quality and modern public transportation,” he said.
Furthermore, he emphasized that Mindanao would be the central focus of his first presidential visit in Japan as he assured to talk on the attainment of the region’s lasting peace and development.
Likewise, President Duterte said that he would pay a courtesy call to His Majesty Emperor Akihito who, according to him, is imbued with great and special significance.
“It renews our shared commitment to a forward-looking partnership that is founded in mutual respect, dignity and solidarity… Ours is abiding partnership with Japan. It is based on common aspirations and shared values of democracy adherence to the rule of law, and peaceful settlement of disputes,” he concluded.
